Ulysses, the great novel by James Joyce,
The characters, the city and the story
I was recently struck by the realization that reading James Joyce
changed my life in many ways. My intent now is to spend a portion
of my time promoting my belief that reading, enjoying and learning
about James Joyce and his works can be a very expansive
and positive endeavor. My first step was to start the
James Joyce Colloquium and it has already opened doors and given
my limited knowledge and understanding of Joyce and his writing
a boost. I hope that my readers will check this out and consider
The Irish Uprising Remembered

When I was very young, my father, Joseph Aloysius McDonough
taught me a lot about Irish History. One of the things that I remember
most vividly is his story of the failed Easter Rising of 1916.
He told me that when he heard the news of the defeat,
surrender and execution of the rebels that it was the
most heartbreaking experience of his life
and the saddest day of his life.
Pop was a young man at the time and his family and the
Irish community in Ohio were all keenly aware of the
Irish Cause for Freedom and were strong Fenian Supporters.
His distant cousin, Thomas McDonagh, had stayed with his family
when he had visited the States on speaking and fund-raising tours.

My Irish Roots go deep, my grandfather Patrick,
an immigrant to America, was a refugee
from the Irish Famine of the 1840s.
It is only in the past year or so that I have had the time
(I always had the inclination) to start reading a lot more.
I am profoundly amazed and grateful that such great men
of character and intelligence are drawn to the
causes of revolution.
American and Irish Heroes All
It happened in America with the likes of Washington, Franklin
and Jefferson and it was also the case in Ireland.
The seven signers of the Irish Proclamation were all great men;
just not quite as lucky as the American Founders.
I guess that Luck of the Irish skips around a bit.

All of these men were brave, committed, decent, thoughtful
and willing to risk everything for what they believed was just and right.
We are all lucky that we share this wonderful common heritage.

The fateful events, the spark for Irish Resistance and Liberty
of Easter Monday, April 24, 1916, will live on in the
hearts of the Irish and the Pan Irish Diaspora for all time.
The signers of the IRISH PROCLAMATION
were all killed in the Rebellion or
captured and executed.
The signers were:
Thomas J. Clarke, Sean Mac Diarmada,
Thomas MacDonagh, Patrick Pearse,
Eamonn Ceannt, James Connolly,
and Joseph Mary Plunkett.
All of the patriots died heroically;
James Connolly who was considered the leader, had been wounded
in the Rebellion and captured. After a quick show trial he was tied to
a chair so he could be upright when he was shot.

All of the signers were members of the Irish Military Council which
had planned the Easter Rising of 1916.The honor of signing first
was given to the oldest and most tested member of the group,
Thomas J. Clarke. At the age of 18, Clarke had joined the
Irish Republican Brotherhood. He was born in 1857 and had
served fifteen years in prison for his revolutionary activities.
Clarke fought at the GPO and was taken into custody after the
surrender on April 29. Clarke was held in Kilmainham Gaol
(then known as the NEW JAIL) until his execution by
firing squad on May 3.

Thomas MacDonagh, had surrendered and he regretted
that he had not fought on to the death or escaped. He wrote from
his cell in the last hours of his life to surviving members of his
regiment that they should always try to escape and never surrender
in future battles so that they might live to fight another day.

Padraig (Patrick) Pearse read the Irish Proclamation
aloud to a small crowd when the Irish Rebels were briefly
in control of the General Post Office. He was captured by
during the British counter attack. Pearse was executed
on May 3.

Sean Mac Diarmada (McDermott) is perhaps the least well known
of the signers. He was a great man and a credit to the Irish Race.
MacDiarmada was born on February 28, 1883 in Kityclogher in
County Leitrim near the Donegal border, a monument stands there
in his memory. In Belfast, he joined the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH).
He rose quickly through the myriad groups dedicated to
Irish Nationalism and finally in 1910 to a position as managing editor
of the newspaper "Irish Freedom"
He had met Thomas Clarke in 1908 in Dublin and the two worked
together for "THE CAUSE" till the end of their days.
He was captured at his station at the GPO on April 29 and after a
court-martial on May 9, Mac Diarmada was executed by firing squad
on May 12, 1916 at the age of 33.

Eamonn Ceannt, was born Edward Kent in Galway in 1881.
At a young age, his family moved to Dublin where he joined the
Gaelic League. After joining the Irish Republican Brotherhood
in 1913, he quickly rose to a position of authority. As one of the
ounders of the Military Committee, he was on Secret British Lists
and was considered a threat. He was briefly held at the New Jail
after his capture at the South Dublin Union. He saw and
was responsible for some of the fiercest resistance and fighting
in the Rebellion but he followed order and surrendered when
ordered to do so. He was executed on May 8 in Kilmainham.

Joseph Plunkett was an Irish Rebel. Mystic and a poet.
He was a devout Catholic and his deep faith was (and still is)
an inspiration to many and to the
justness of the Irish cause for freedom.Plunkett was born in Dublin
and educated at Belvedere College
and Stonyhurst College. He was editor of the Irish Review and a
co-founder of the Irish Theatre in Dublin. Plunkett was a close
friend to both Thomas MacDonagh and Padraic Pearse,
also noted Irish poets.
He was captured and held by the British army in the Richmond
Barracks. In the morning of May 4, just before his execution
in the courtyard of Kilmainham jail, he married his longtime fiance,
Grace Gifford. Plunkett was only 28.
I See His Blood Upon the Rose
by Joseph Mary Plunkett (1887-1916)

I see his blood upon the rose
And in the stars the glory of His eyes,
His body gleams amid eternal snows,
His tears fall from the skies.
I see his face in every flower;
The thunder and the singing of the birds Are but His voice
-- and carven by His power Rocks are His written words.
All pathways by His feet are worn,
His strong heart stirs the ever-beating sea,
His crown of thorns is twined with every thorn,
His cross is every tree.

A Wee Bit About the
Great Saint Patrick...
Believe it or not; he did NOT invent GREEN BEER!
St Patrick, best known as the Missionary Apostle and patron
Saint of Ireland was born in Roman Britain around 387AD.
Captured as a youth and sold into slavery by Irish pirates;
he turned to his Christian Faith for solace and strength during
his years in captivity. When he finally escaped; he vowed to
return to spread the "GOOD NEWS".
The dates are murky in history but it is believed that he
returned to Ireland as early as 415. We know that he
worked faithfully as a zealous priest and bishop
for the rest of his long life.
(Some sources say that Patrick dies in 493AD;
other sources say 460 or 461. --Ed.)
One thing we know for sure; Patrick was a great man of
strong will and deep faith in the TRIUNE GOD.

Saint Patrick's Breastplate
A prayer and sometime hymn, written and preached by him
has come down to us in several forms;
it was written in Ancient Irish and translated into
Latin during the Middle Ages.
It demonstrates his Faith and Fighting Spirit.
St. Patrick prepared these words before his battles
and debates with the Druids.
He credits these prayers for his victory over Pagans
and his ability to build the Irish Church.

I bind myself today to God's Power to guide me,
God's Might to uphold me.
God's Wisdom to teach me,
God's Eye to watch over me,
God's Ear to hear me,
God's Word to give me speech,
God's Hand to guide me,
God's Way to lie before me,
God's Shield to shelter me...

Christ protect me today;
Against every poison,
Against burning,
Against drowning,
Against death-wounds...

Christ with me,
Christ before me,
Christ behind me,
Christ beneath me,
Christ above me,
Christ at my right,
Christ at my left,
Christ in the fort...
<div style="color: black; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Patrick Facts
Here are a few more items of interest about the
Great Saint and his Grand Day!
Did you know that GREEN is associated with the Irish
and Ireland because of the Shamrock and the great green
of the land itself but that Blue was the dominant color
of his vestments.
In Ireland you will often hear the reference
to "St. Patrick Blue"

The Shamrock is also associated with Saint Patrick's Day,
Ireland and the Irish because legend has it
that St. Patrick himself used the little plant, native to Ireland,
to explain how the Trinity or as he called it
THE TRIUNE GOD, could exist as a single entity.
The Irish of the time of Patrick were very tuned into nature
and their surroundings; so it was a perfect metaphor.

Another legend that St. Patrick drove poisonous snakes
out of Ireland; often attributed to him as one of his miracles
is probably not true. Evidence suggests that post-glacial
Ireland never had any snakes in the first place.

EARLY LIFE
We know for sure that St. Patrick was born in Roman Britain
but it is not certain exactly where. Many scholars think
St. Patrick was born in Kilpatrick, near Dumbarton
in Scotland. There is another group that think the great saint
was born in present day Wales.
From his own writings,
we do know that Patrick was born to Christian parents,
that his given name was Maewyn Succat
and that he was kidnapped by Irish pirates at 16
and sold into slavery in Ireland.
At about the age of 20, Saint Patrick escaped
and sailors took him back to Britain.
In a dream he was told to leave Ireland by walking
to the coast and looking for a ship.
Dreams and visions came to him for the rest of his life
and he considered them Divine Intervention.
After studying for the priesthood,
Saint Patrick was ordained
by Saint Germanus, the Bishop of Auxerre around 416.
In 432, Pope Celestine I consecrated him as a bishop.
It is not totally clear if St. Patrick was in
Ireland during all of this period or not.
We do know for sure that Saint Patrick arrived
back to Ireland to spread the Good News as a
new Bishop. It is written in many ancient texts
that he arrived at Slane on March 25, 433.
Patrick must have spent a lot of his life in good company.
Many of his disciples and converts were
also made saints for their work with him:
Auxilius, Beningnus, Iserninus and Fiacc ,
all were canonized by the early Church.

Most scholars believe that St Patrick died on March 17
in 461AD. It is a national holiday in Ireland
and also on the island of Montserrat in the Caribbean
which was founded by Irish refugees.
It is a bank holiday in Northern Ireland and a provincial holiday
in the Canadian province of Newfoundland.
There have been many failed attempts to make it a
National Holiday in the United States.
Should we be working on making it a legal Holiday?

And finally, here is a great traditional Irish Toast
for St. Patrick's Day;

"May the roof above us never fall in, and
may we friends beneath it never fall out."

Six-time Academy Award nominee Jim Sheridan burst onto the international film scene with his 1989 masterpiece MY LEFT FOOT, which announced him as a major talent. He continued to move audiences with powerful dramas set in his native Ireland (IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER, THE BOXER) as well as America (IN AMERICA, GET RICH OR DIE TRYIN'). All of his films are profoundly character-driven yet broad in scope, examining the geographical, cultural and economic factors that influence how we live.
The Cinematheque will present some of Jim Sheridan's best films alongside his latest powerful work, BROTHERS, with Mr. Sheridan live in-person.
Dir. Jim Sheridan. When Sam (Tobey Maguire) is reported dead in Iraq, his brother, Tommy (Jake Gyllenhaal), pitches in to help Sam's widow and high school sweetheart, Grace (Natalie Portman). Their mutual mourning brings Tommy and Grace closer together - a situation that becomes extremely complicated when Sam returns from Iraq, alive and well (physically, if not mentally).
IN AMERICA, 2003, Fox Searchlight, 103 min. Dir. Jim Sheridan. To begin all over again is a classic American dream, Irish émigrés Johnny and Sarah (Paddy Considine and Samantha Morton) discover it’s hard to do when they hit the streets of modern-day Manhattan, their two spunky young daughters in tow, and emerge into a realm as comical and adventure-filled as it is strange and terrifying. Discussion in between films with director Jim Sheridan.
Saturday, January 9 - 7:30 PM JIM SHERIDAN
Double Feature: MY LEFT FOOT: THE STORY OF CHRISTY BROWN, 1989, Miramax, 103 min. Dir. Jim Sheridan. In an Oscar-winning performance, Daniel Day-Lewis plays Christy Brown, a painter with cerebral palsy who can only control his left foot. In spite of his disability, Brown becomes an important writer and artist in this heartbreaking yet profoundly inspirational tale.
IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER, 1993, Universal, 133 min. Director Jim Sheridan and Daniel Day-Lewis reunite for the true story of the Guildford Four, a group falsely convicted of an IRA pub bombing. Pete Postlethwaite and Emma Thompson co-star in this drama that beautifully combines character study and political history to create a modern classic. Jim McDonoughhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12682985051110001179noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-160289554395445529.post-51302002051566818882009-12-28T06:37:00.000-08:002009-12-28T16:19:02.435-08:00Looking to the New Year!2010
Goals and Dreams and Morbid Reality
or the IRISH Life Tour Continues...
for the next week, I will be writing about and expanding
on three topics of Irish Interest;
RIVERDANCE, THE CHIEFTAINS and
VISITING IRELAND THIS YEAR.

I think it is my Irish Catholic fascination
with the Shamrock that makes me think of
THREE things in clusters at one time.
I like to come up with three of everything!
TRIADS!
To get your year off to a great start, may I suggest a variant
that suits you of my idea.
Sit down and write down some goals of a personal, family
and business nature.
Think of some of your dreams or loftier ambitions for your life;
put them on paper; tell someway; make them real!

Then throw in a balance---
consider the world and what part you play in it and
what small course correction that you might take to make it a better place;
volunteer, donate some money or time or both and maybe just be nicer...
something positive.
If a large number of us would think in these terms; the aggregate
effect would make a difference for the common good.

Now, the THREE IRISH POINTS of INTEREST...
Riverdance is on its final tour.
One of the stops is 16 performances at the
Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles.

The Chieftains are coming to the states and this wonderful group,
known as Ireland's Musical Ambassadors to the world will be palying at the
Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts in Southern California.

Finally, this is a great year to go to Ireland!
The recession has lowered rates a bit and there are some good deals on airfare.
We will be expanding on this a lot over the next few weeks.

More soon:
meanwhile we invite you to sign up fr our FREE
Weekly Irish E-Missive.
Christmas Season for me and
I am exceptionally blessed and lucky.
It is amazing how much
more energy and focus I have.
I give myself high marks for finally getting
into the habit of long walks,
a lot less drinking,
no smoking and slightly improved diet.
My renewed faith in God and
my own strange allegiance to my
Irish Catholic heritage has
helped a lot too.
The biggest blessing I have is my family.
My son Mark has also been a great help
to me. He is big in the moral support area
and he has helped a lot with the business
by running errands and helping
with the books. The other incredible turn

of tides is that I am also living an almost stress
free existence thanks to my son Matt
and his wife, the best daughter-in-law
in the world, Chasity.

Last year at this time, I was so ill and miserable
that I thought it was probably going to be
my last Christmas.
I was seemingly old, stressed and worn out.
The biggest stress that I now have is publishing
the Irish News & Entertainment.
My paper has not been a financial success for many years
and my son and his wife think I'm nuts
and stupidly stubborn for doing it still.

Stress is a killer and it appears that the correlation to
being a publisher of an Irish paper and stress is high!
Unless, I can fix that fairly soon,
my print publishing days are numbered.
Any input from any of my readers on this
topic will be appreciated. Now back to Christmas!!

I've had time this year to send out a few cards, a few gifts
and have actually bought a few presents for my sons early;
first time ever for that.

The so called War On Christmas amazes me.
What the heck has happened
in America that makes people so snide and
cantankerous. I am all for Christmas in all
its many forms and traditions.
I think Bill O'Reilly and his
WE SAY Merry Christmas slogan
is not just silly but obnoxius.
Say Merry Christmas by all means,
but for God's Sake don't
do so in a pugnacious manner.
The other idiots who complain about the
separation of religion and the state are
even higher on my Eat Coal list!
In the words of that wonderful and
often misunderstood American, Rodney King,
"Can't we just all get along!"
<div style="color: #4c1130; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Hope you all are enjoying the
Even Ireland Suffers Budget Crunch
The Celtic Tiger is going to be forced to take its belt in a notch
according to a story in the Irish Times of yesterday
(Monday, December 7);
The Irish government will announce details this week to
curtail and cut government spending across the board.
This is quite interesting in view of the grant that the
Irish Government just made to the Irish Arts Centre.
However, it also proves a point;
the Irish cut spending across the board so that
no part of the spending cuts hurts one department more
than any other. Again a lesson we could learn from the
better balanced Irish politicians!
See the entire story at:
irishtimes.com/newspaper/frontpage/

Lesson To Be Learned...
We need to take heed of the Republic of Irelands actions
and insist that our local, state and Federal government act in a similar fashion.
The elitist professional politicians and
entrenched bureaucrats that are running things now
are not going to go gently into the good night.
We have a real fight on our hands!
Bill O'Reilly came up with an interesting idea on his show late
last week; the Fox News Commentator proposed a
Federal Sales Tax of 2% on EVERYTHING
sold in the US except food.
Two stipulations were called for:
First that the Emergency Sales Tax be temporary
---for five years maximum.
and that it go along with a freeze in government spending.
O'Reilly claims that competition in the marketplace
would ease and absorb the disruptions caused by the tax.

I could support this if the federal government was mandated
to not just freeze spending but to also cut spending by 3%.
The combination could make a significant dent in the
Federal Deficit over Five Years.
If we do not do something of this magnitude immediately,
we are going to totally ruin the economy and leave a legacy
of total economic chaos to our children.
I think this plan and the plan outlined in my
Economics of Chaos blog of a few weeks ago to put
Congress into the Social Security program and
take away the ridiculous pensions that they have voted
for themselves would go a long way toward returning
us to some fiscal sanity.

We do indeed have a real fight on our hands;
this is absolutely the Second American Revolution.
I also believe that it we do not elect a slate of
real conservatives and independents to office in 2010
that our American Democracy and our very way of life
will be lost to the Lovers of Big Government
and Big Corporations.
TheTime is Ripe
This is a clarion call to save America!
Start now by considering a run for office yourself
as an independent fiscal conservation.
We need patriots.
Find others like us and work and support to elect
people who love America and its tradition of freedom.
We need to empty the public trough from which these pigs
who claim they are public servants feed.
Together, it can be done.
God Bless America.
May 2010 be a year of change that we can trust.
Change that we can control.
A change to return sovereignty to the people.

Today is Friday the 13th. I hope all of our friends and readers had a decent day.
The Irish of popular culture and imagination are a superstitious lot but I don't know of any un-lucky tales about this day in Irish lore. The best thing I could find was the fact that Rossini died on this day and he supposedly hated Fridays and the number thirteen (triskaidekaphobia).
The fear of Friday the 13th is called paraskevidekatriaphobia, a word derived from the concatenation of the Greek words Paraskeví (meaning Friday), and dekatreís (meaning thirteen), attached to phobía (meaning fear). The term triskaidekaphobia derives from the Greek words "tris", meaning 'three', "kai", meaning 'and', and "deka", meaning 'ten' and good old phobia. That is all of got.
All the best,
Jim

Shake your shillelagh in Montana and you will surely get a few smiles from the Irish Americans. The Irish came to Montana to be miner's, loggers, railroad builders and farmers. It has been said that by the early 1900's there were more Irish in Butte, Montana, than in the city of Boston. They brought with them names like Murphy, Daly, Sullivan and O'Reilly. A work ethic built on the American dream and a strong Catholic back ground proved them unstoppable.

Montana is 570 miles wide and 315 miles deep, the fourth largest state, giving its Irish population room to spread out and find a place to call home.

A success story in our area is that of Marcus Daly, who was born in County Cavan. He came to Montana and started the mining company that would be known as The Anaconda Company. The similarities of the landscape would entice his fellow Irishman to come to work for his company. When Daly needed lumbar for his mines he incorporated the City of Hamilton where the saw mills provided people with income and a sleepy town to raise their families, The Daly's kept a summer home in the city, and it is currently being restored as a historical site. Welcome to the Daly Mansion website .

In early August the city of Butte is over-run with Irish, Irish Americans and Irish-for-the-day folks who come for the craic of this wonderful celebration. From dawn to dusk there is an activity to interest all.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; color: black; font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: left;">world and WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERANCE!

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; color: black; font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: left;">"I'd like to share some insights that I've had over the past few weeks. As most of you know in the past year, I was seriously ill. Thanks to God, the prayers, love and concern of my family and friends, Great American Health Care and a bit of my own Irish Luck; I am now healthy. I've had a lot of time to think and be inspired. The sources for some of these inspirational thoughts were family members who went to Africa earlier this year with a church group to do some volunteer work at an orphanage for aids victims and my good friend, Nick Jordan, who has been working on African relief projects for several years. I really think that we can make a difference and here is my request.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; color: black; font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: left;">Help feed the hungry.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; color: black; font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: left;">Thousands of our fellow humans starve to death every year. Yet, in the United States, obesity is one of our major health problems. We could, and in fact, we do grow enough food to feed the world.

<div style="color: black; font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">Here is how you can get involved and help.

<div style="color: black; font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">Raise you own consciousness on the issue. When writing this blog I took an evening and researched the subject and learned a lot. Do the same. There are links at the end of this piece to give you a head start. Then spread the word; help raise the awareness of your family and friends on the facts.

<div style="color: black; font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="color: black; font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">Get involved...Skip a meal...

<div style="color: black; font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">This writer is sorry to admit it but I am overweight...I have been overeating for at least 30 years.

<div style="color: black; font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">That easily adds up to at least 1500 meals that I could have and should have skipped in the past thirty years!

<div style="color: black; font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">Had I skipped those meals and sent only an average of $3. per meal to a worthy relief organization; that would have been $4500. $4500!!

<div style="color: black; font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">My life would be dramatically improved; had I acted and not procrastinated all these years.

<div style="color: black; font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">One thing for sure, I would not be quite as heavy as I am now. Some of the other facts are even more compelling; science has now proven that losing weight and being thiner extends life and makes you healthier!! And the other more grim reality about this fanciful might have been scenario is that even a small donation could easily have saved a life.

<div style="color: black; font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">Take the pledge with me; start skipping a meal a week. The reward will be immediate.

<div style="color: black; font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">If you are in a position to donate $3 or $4 or so for that skipped meal to a worthy group that is fighting hunger; all the better." JmcD, September, '09

Colleagues, and Patriots:

This to alert you that I have been invited to guest on THE VICTORIA TAFT SHOW, tonight, Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009, at 6:35 p.m., PDT, broadcasting out of Portland, OR, at 860AM, and heard nationwide live online at www.KPAM.com.

The subject of the interview will be on the U.S. Supreme Court's hearing oral argument today in the Mojave Desert Veterans Memorial Case.

It will also include the New York Times, the self-proclaimed "newspaper of record," making an egregiously false assertion of alleged fact in its editorial today, citing what has been proved to be a "hoax" in support of the NY Times call on the Supreme Court to destroy the Cross at the Mojave Desert Veterans Memorial. My demand letter to the NY Times to correct and retract its egregious error of fact is attached at the conclusion of this Broadcast Alert. Why the NY Times would perpetuate this hoax designed to deceive the American public, needs to be explained. Indeed, didn't the editors or reporters of the august NY T imes even read the court of appeal opinion detailing the facts before the NY Times pu blished an editorial falsely claiming that an alleged Buddhist had been discriminatorily=2 0denied the right to establish a Buddhist shine near the memorial? As detailed below, it is but a hoax concocted and carried out by ACLU's plaintiff Frank Buno, his phony crony Herman R. Hoops who invented the name "Serpa San Harold Horpa" to pretend to be a Buddhist, and the ACLU, which in nine years of litigation has known of the hoax but never corrected nor repudiated it when it was reported as a real instance of discrimination by the media. (See my letter to the NY Times below.)

The Mojave Desert Veterans Memorial Case will have nationwide impact, deciding whether 300,000,000 Americans will have the right to establish veterans memorials in manner in which American citizens and their communities choose, including symbols or expressions which have a religious aspect; or whether such choices may be vetoed by ACLU and the atheists, agnostics, and secular-cleansing fanatics it represents on claims they are "offended" by the sight of a Christian Cross, or other symbol with a religious aspect, at a veterans memorial.

Although most Americans are unaware of it, the ACLU is reaping millions of dollars in judge-ordered, taxpayer-paid attorney fee "awards" in Establishment of Religion Clause cases against veterans memorials, the Boy Scouts, and other targets of the ACLU's politically-driven, secular-cleansi ng fanaticism. The ACLU is exploiting the Civil Rights Attorney Fees Act and other federal fee-shifting statutes to fleece taxpayers and enrich itself and/or to use the very threat of imposition of such fees if suit is filed under the Establishment Clause as a "club" to bludgeon public bodies into surrender to the ACLU's fanatical secular-cleansing demands.

The American Legion has been a leader in calling on Congress to reform the law to stop the abusive Establishment Clause litigation attacks of the ACLU and its exploitation of the civil rights acts for profit and intimidation.

The importance of the of the Mojave Desert Veterans Memorial Case, and related Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial Case, now on appeal in the 9th Circuit Court of Appeal, cannot be overstated. The American Legion Department of California, and The American Legion, are participating in these cases as amicus curiae, represented by the Alliance Defense Fund and Liberty Legal Institute respectively, as is the Thomas More Law Center, which has led the fight to save the Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial.

EGREGIOUS ERROR OF FACT IN EDITORIAL NEEDS CORRECTION FORTHWITH AND PROMINENTLY

"The New York Times is guilty of an egregious disservice and deception in its editorial “The Constitution and the Cross” (Oct. 7, 2007), pertaining to the Mojave Desert Veterans Memorial Case (Buono vs. Salazar) which is pending before the Supreme Court, by perpetuating the hoax that: “In 1999, the National Park Service denied a request by an individual to place a Buddhist memorial in the area.”

The truth is stated in t he Court of Appeal decision itself. The Court wrote:

“The controversy surrounding the cross surfaced in 1999, when NPS [National Park Service]20received a letter from an individual who identified himself as ‘Sherpa San Harold Horpa’ of Jensen, Utah. The person who sent the letter under the alias ‘Sherpa San Harold Horpa’ is also known to [ACLU=2 0plaintiff Frank] Buono as Herman R. Hoops (‘Hoops’), a retired NPS employee and long-time acquaintance of Buono. Hoops requested permission from NPS to erect a ‘stupa’ (a dome-shaped Buddhist shrine) on a rock outcrop at a trail head located near the cross.”

Thus, this case, began with a hoax of discrimination against Buddhists in favor of Christians concocted by ACLU’s plaintiff Frank Buono, former Associate Superintendent of the Mojave Park Preserve, and his crony, NPS retiree Herman R. Hoops, a/k/a “Sherpa San Harold Horpa (sic).”

In short, there is absolutely no evidence of discriminatory trea tment adverse to purported “Buddhists” or anyone else in the record of this case, including the hoaxsters “Sherpa San Harold Horpa” and ACLU’s plaintiff Frank Buono – the former Ass’t Superintendent of the Mojave Preserve who had the power to object to the memorial and cross=2 0but did nothing until retiring, moving to Oregon, and then suing through the ACLU to destroy a cross honoring veterans a thousand miles away in the remote desert, e leven miles off the nearest highway, because he is “offended” by the20sight of a cross at a veterans memorial on public land.

The Mojave Desert Veterans Memorial Case will be a landmark deciding whether 300-million Americans in may have the right to choose how to honor their war dead and other veterans, or whether the ACLU and single persons “offended” by the sight of symbols of a religious significance at veterans memorials will have a veto power over such decisions.

This is an issue of great importance to veterans, and ought to be to all Americans. The views and opinions of Americans should not be misshaped by perpetuation by the NY Times of the utterly false, conc octed hoax of Plaintiff Frank Buono, “Sherpa San Harold Horpa,” and the ACLU, that there was an act of exclusionary discrimination against anyone at the Mojave Desert WWI Veterans Memorial.

&nb sp; Finally, as a former staff attorney three decades ago of the ACLU of Southern California which brought this misbegotten case, and which by such fanatical secular-cleansing litigation has become the Taliban of American liberal sec ularism contemporarily, I am appalled that the ACLU itself has not acted for these nine long years of litigation to repudiate the hoax which the NY Times now perpetuates as has CNN and other like-minded media.

The NY Times should correct its error, forthwith, or forfeit any claim to credibility.

Rees Lloyd, Attorney and Director of the Defense of Veterans Memorials Project of The American Legion Department of California and the Alliance Defense Fund (amicus curiae in the Mojave Desert Veterans Memorial Case (Buono vs. Salazaer)."

Irish Olympic Champion Darren Sutherland

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; font-size: x-small;">Irish papers have reported that Darren Sutherland, who won an Olympic bronze medal at the Beijing Games in 2008 was found dead at his home according to his manager Frank Maloney. Sutherland was only 27.
Sutherland was unbeaten in his first four pro fights, and was scheduled to fight on October 16. He was due to appear with Maloney at a news conference to talk about his next fight and when he did not respond to a call, the manager went to look for him. Sutherland's death was called a suicide.

Olympic middleweight champion James DeGale, who beat Sutherland in Beijing, paid tribute to his former rival.
"He had an Olympic bronze medal and his whole life to look forward to," the Englishman said. "He had a great future and my heart goes out to everyone who knew him."
Former Featherweight Champion Barry McGuiggan said Sutherland had the ability to win a world title."It is an absolute tragedy, I would describe Darren as a phenomenal talent. He represented his country with pride as an amateur and I believe he would have become a world champion in the professional ranks one day."
Darren John Sutherland was born in Dublin on April 18, 1982. He was raised in County Meath and died in London on September 14, 2009.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">please indulge me...

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; color: black; font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: left;">On a more somber note, I'd like to share some insights that I've had over the past few weeks.

<div style="color: black; font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="color: black; font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">If you are in a position to donate $3 or $4 or so for that skipped meal to a worthy group that is fighting hunger; all the better.
A Letter from the Publisher

Well Folks, the die is cast. We will be printing another issue of the
Irish News and Entertainment after a three month hiatus. It will actually be our 17th. Anniversary Issue.

Special thanks to The Los Angeles County Fair, The Seaside Highland Games and Terry McCartan at Metro Acura and Honda for committing in front to advertise with us online and in print.

We are confident that the interest and readership is still out there for a quality niche market publication.
As mentioned before, a lot if factors contributed to our suspension of publication; my health issues, the economy in general and a loss of long time advertisers and readers in Southern California owing primarily to a demographic shift there over the past ten years.
Let me briefly discuss the reasons why I think things have changed. On a personal note, I am healthy again. I have made a full recovery. On the business side, we will expand the paper beyond Southern California.
There are millions of people throughout the States that are interested in an Irish paper and we will fill the void both in print and online.

We will need a lot of support to bring the Irish News and Entertainment to its full potential.
I think this blog will help achieve our goals. There will be changes in content and in distribution.
We are going to add several new and expanded features. Our Calendars were always popular and we will expand them. New features such as a CELTIC CROSSWORD PUZZLE are being developed.
As we go national, we expect to garner more advertising. We have already negotiated a barter advertising deal with a music distributor so we will start our successful free Irish Music CD with a subscription offer again.
To the many people who have called and written me and expressed an interest in this project, we send a sincere thanks to you. To all our readers, your thoughts and feedback are appreciated and needed.
The Los Angeles Police Emerald Society Pipes and Drums will kick off the evening an hour earlier this year. Then "Highland Way" from San Diego, with their Scottish traditional tunes will be up first followed by the crowd pleasing "Slugger O'Toole" and their high energy songs. The world class Scottish fiddling band The McKassons will end the show with the Margaret Cleary Dancers with their beautiful traditional dresses, featured throughout the evening. "We have a nice mix of Irish and Scottish music this year." said Thom MacNamara veteran producer of the show. "It will be a great night of traditional Celtic music and dance for the whole family". The event is a fund raiser for The Celtic Arts Center and has become a tradition in Los Angeles. "The outdoor setting of the Ford makes it a special night for us each year. It brings out the Celtic community and it has an intimate feel, like a big family reunion picnic." Said Adrein Burke, president of the The Celtic Arts Center. The concert is scheduled for Sunday September 20th, 2009 at 7PM at the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre in Hollywood. Tickets are $20 and $22 before Sept 13 and $25 and $27 after Sept 13th. Student/child price $12 and group rates available. For tickets, log on to www.fordtheatres.org or call the Ford Box Office at 323 461-3673 Fiddles that pulse with electric energy; violas that hum like the plaintive croon of cicadas; banjos that sing like springtime incarnate: Seattle-based McKassons aren’t your average fiddle band. One of the genres fastest rising talents, the McKassons create evocative soundtracks for adventures in distant lands and stories yet untold. The McKassons bring a distinctly American sensibility to traditional Scottish folk, composing songs that have the feel of Celtic music blended with the spirit of folk rock and bluegrass. Ken O'Malley belts out a feisty blend of traditional and new Irish folk music, both lyrical and instrumental. He sings about every-thing from the subtleties of true love, to the struggle of the working class, to the joy of a pint of beer at the end of a long, hard ,journey. Everything is played with style and flair. Ken is equally talented with a guitar or mandolin and his singing is strong and passionate. Slugger O'Toole is an LA-based Celtic trad/rock quintet who share a passion for the drinking, fighting & work songs of Ireland. They hail from the four corners, and were thrown together by their mutual love of the music and culture. Slugger concocts a lethal brew of foot-stomping classics, deft instrumentals and five-part a cappella killers. Everybody sweats, everybody sings! From his native homeland, Scotland, Brian Caldwell of Glasgow leads Highland Way on a musical journey through traditional and modern Celtic melodies. Joining Brian are Heloise Love (on vocals, guitar and percussion), Paul Graham Castellanos (on fiddle, mandolin, guitar, banjo and varied strings), and Richard Gordon Heinz, (on vocals, bass and keyboard). Rousing songs and haunting ballads blend with original instrumental medleys and touches of whimsy in performances featuring traditional Celtic music from Scotland and Ireland, with some added original and contemporary Celtic melodies. The Ford Amphitheatre is located at 2580 Cahuenga Blvd. East, Hollywood, CA 90068, just off the 101 Hollywood Freeway across from the Hollywood Bowl and south of Universal Studios. The grounds open two hours before showtime for picnicking. The Ford offers a number of dining options: a variety of food and beverages is available on site and box dinners for evening events may be ordered in advance. Patrons are welcome to bring their own food and drink. The Ford is disabled accessible. Portable wireless listening devices are available upon request. On-site, stacked parking costs $5 per vehicle for evening shows and $1 per vehicle for morning family shows. For evening shows only, FREE non-stacked parking serviced by a FREE shuttle to the Ford, for evening amphitheatre performances only, is available at the Universal City Metro Station lot at Lankershim Blvd. and Campo de Cahuenga. The shuttle, which cycles every15-20 minutes, stops in the "kiss and ride" area. This event is part of the Ford Amphitheatre 2009 Season, a multi-disciplinary arts series produced by the Los Angeles County Arts Commission in cooperation with Los Angeles Countybased arts organizations.
From Seattle to Cork, Special memorials and Masses have been held or are being planned in honor of the late Senator Ted Kennedy. It is fitting that we pause and remember this man and the time in which he lived. For me, it is the span of my entire adult life. His reach was broad and long in time and effort. He will be remembered not just for his legislative achievements, especially in education and children's health care but for being a staunch, proud liberal.
As an Irish-American, I always appreciated his love of Ireland and the Irish. Kennedy was one of the first American politicians to see and voice his thoughts that
"The Troubles" in the north of Ireland were civil rights issues. In the Senate in 1971 Kennedy pointed out that "Ulster is becoming Britain's Vietnam" and called for a united Ireland. After Bloody Sunday 1972, when British soldiers killed 13 civil rights marchers in Derry, Kennedy called for a British withdrawal from Northern Ireland. All through the 1970s and 1980s, he kept the Irish Civil Rights agenda alive and led a group that was to become known as the "Four Horsemen".
The four were Ted Kennedy, Tip O'Neill, Hugh Carey and Sen. Patrick Moynihan.
U.S. ambassador to Ireland, Jean Kennedy Smith and Senator Kennedy were very influential in allowing Gerry Adams into the US against the wishes of the British government in 1994. That bold change in policy was the catalyst, that with the guidance of Senator George Mitchell, finally led to the 1998 Good Friday Agreement. So we owe the peace in Ireland today thanks in large part to the late senator.

Yesterday, Ireland's Taoiseach (Prime Minister), Brian Cowen, said: "In good days and bad, Ted Kennedy worked valiantly for the cause of peace on this island."

Micheál Martin, Ireland's Foreign Minister, said that the former senator "knew and loved Ireland - its people, its music and its culture", adding that "his special dedication to the peace process was unrivalled and deeply held".

Our colleague Trina Vargo sent us the following to share with our readers. Vargo served as Foreign Policy Adviser to Senator Kennedy from 1987-1998 and was heavily involved in the Northern Ireland peace process. She subsequently founded, and is president of, the US-Ireland Alliance.

"Senator Kennedy s commitment to Ireland and Northern Ireland spanned forty years and no one has contributed more to the strengthening of the relationship between the US and the island of Ireland. He encouraged me to create the US-Ireland Alliance and everyone at the Alliance is grateful for the continuous support he gave to the organization and the Mitchell Scholarship program. Personally, he gave me, at a very young age, an incredible opportunity to be a part of making a difference in a way that few people get. I told him when I left his employ that, no matter what I did with the rest of my life, the way that I see things would, to a very great extent, be shaped by the way that I learned to see things by working with him. And for that I feel honored and privileged -- but most of all I feel incredibly lucky -- that he allowed me to be a part of his work."
A brief synopsis of the film:

Amid a haze of cigarette smoke and uneaten food, the family of Enda Doyle (Malcolm McDowell -- A Clockwork Orange, NBC’s ”Heroes”) gathers in Dublin for his wake. A university librarian, poet, and rascal, Doyle has left behind a trail of unresolved issues, a dysfunctional family, and a disturbing mystery. A cache of self-recorded video diaries sheds light on who he really was and the secrets he was never able to share. Based on the acclaimed play by Joseph O’Connor, Red Roses and Petrol explores the complex dynamics of family relationships with sharp humor and surprising turns, taking us on an intense emotional journey into the depths of what is truth and what is love. Also starring Max Beesley (BBC’s “Hotel Babylon”), Susan Lynch (Waking Ned Devine), and former Miss Ireland Olivia Tracey, with songs by Flogging Molly and Susanna Hoffs of the Bangles.Jim McDonoughhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12682985051110001179noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-160289554395445529.post-21876998639263962362009-08-25T08:46:00.000-07:002009-10-13T19:34:59.703-07:00Keep Yer Irish Up 24/7I have been asked a lot about the fate of the Irish News & Entertainment newspaper.
There is no definitive answer to the question yet; the best that I can say is to please be patient. I published the paper for 16 years. I would like to see it continue but in a down market, changing demographics in Southern California and some health issues; I had to suspend publication.
In the meantime; please start reading this blog and our E-mails through Constant Contact. The Celtic Arts Center in Los Angeles is planning their SIXTH ANNUAL CONCERT in September. We will be doing an E-mail with details of that and other Irish/Celtic events soon.
